Dissecting
the Drive Axle
The drive axle is the one that directly drives
the chain and sprocket, in the picture to the right the
shiftfork journals are indicated. The yellow arrows show
the movement the shiftforks make on the gears, gears that
move with the shiftfork are splined - any force put on them
will be output on the main axle. The remaining gears ride
on bearings (oiled collars) and are not splined. These gears
are engaged by the "engagement dogs" incorporated
in the the splined gears when they move into the free spinning
gears. This is the assembly where the trouble lies. The
second gear from the left is the 4th gear wheel. In the
picture you can see its engaged with the 2nd gear to its
right, at this point we can see anything wrong.

In the picture to the left we can see the
damage by lifting the 4th gear wheel upwards, the crown
on the shiftfork journal is almost gone, it took all the
engagement dogs with it or was it the other way around?
Rollover the image to see the damaged shiftfork that was
trying to hold everything together, the shiftfork was thoroughly
trashed with alot of heat "blueing"
